Walking with God through Pain and Suffering을 서평하도록 하겠습니다.

“Answer to Job”

Modern Person’s Rebellion against the Unjust God

Carl Jung’s Answer to Job is probably best understood not as God’s answer to Job which remains unanswered in the book of Job, but as Jung’s defense for Job against God, which Job’s three friends did not carry out. This book is not just about the book of Job, but comprehensively dealing with Jung’s theological thought centering on the book of Job.  In this review, I will take a close look at Jung’s attack against God, thereby reexamining the dominant God-image in Western society, which is overly dualistic, while the original monotheistic God-image originated from the church fathers encompasses both the good and the evil under God’s rule.

To begin with, Carl Gustav Jung is the founder of a school of psychology called Analytical Psychology, a branch within Freud’s Psychoanalysis.  As much as the two terms sound similar to each other, it is said that Freud has influenced Jung so much in the development of Jung’s thought. However, not agreeing with Freud’s analysis over libido, Jung parted ways with Freud to study the broader dimensions of human consciousness-unconsciousness and their dynamic.  For this reason, Jung’s Answer to Job also looks into what might be called the internal consciousness of God.  In particular, Jung’s claim that God is not Trinity, but Quaternity, the evil added to the three persons in union, is the area that every believer needs to respond.

According to Jung, God is the one who needs to be condemned in the relationship between God and Job.  First off, Jung calls God a self-contradictory being, which he uses the word “antinomy” to describe God, because when Satan urged God to inflict pain on Job, if God were such just and loving being, then it would not make sense to see God giving in to such request so quickly and easily.  If spoken more harshly, God might even be called a schizophrenic being, since the Bible asserts the importance of human being to God all throughout, so much so that human beings are God’s image.  Still, God inflicts unjust and undeserved pain on Job. Even so, this God still wants to be praised and honored among humans.  If one understands God as personal being, such demeanor of God necessarily leads one to think of God as lacking in self-reflection. At this point, Jung draws upon Sophia from the book of Proverbs, the goddess of wisdom. Yahweh realized Yahweh’s lack of self-reflection with the emergence of Sophia, keeping Yahweh from continuing on unjust measure against humanity.  Therefore, the only placating measure would be, according to Jung, the Incarnation, which God becomes human to suffer like human, particularly Job.

Overall, the Yahweh God Jung understands is more masculine than feminine, representing the pure might/force, while Sophia is feminine, correcting the masculine Yahweh God and leading Yahweh on to the right path.  What is important is that all these things contribute to the internal growth of God’s consciousness, sacrificing Job as the scapegoat for this purpose.  What needs to be of particular attention is, as I already said, that the traditional doctrine of Trinity is in need of revision, for this Trinity does not encompass the evil, represented by Satan, which is part of God’s instrument for ruling the world. For Jung, what corresponds to reality more than the Trinity is Quaternity that takes the evil into account in explaining and understanding God-image.  While Jung does not go into what Quaternity is in depth, what becomes apparent is that Jung understands that there is a certain analogy between God’s consciousness and human consciousness, inferring from human consciousness what might be likely to happen in God’s consciousness. It is in this regard that Jung’s method is very much akin to Augustine’s psychological understanding of Trinity. (On the other hand, there is a more social approach to Trinity, represented by that of the Cappadocian Fathers.  Of course such division between psychological and social understandings of Trinity is losing its persuasive power as contemporary research on Trinity develops what the church fathers actually said.)  One psychological and historical context that needs to be kept in mind in this regard is that Jung wrote this book during the post-War times in 1952, for which there were many intellectuals who were questioning painstakingly the problem of God and justice.  It goes without saying that Jung also had this matter in mind in writing this book.  Doubtless this issue of God and justice would not go away just because the war time has elapsed.  For this reason, Jung’s reading of the book of Job might leave us with more room for reading Job as our own, rather than someone else’s.

Lastly, what the Christian can take away from reading Jung’s reading of Job is that Jung’s understanding of God intriguingly coincides with that of some church fathers, that is, their critique against an understanding of God in terms of dualism.  Namely, understanding God as the representative of good, and Satan as the representative of evil. However, the historic Christian theology would not agree with this.  Jung, also, agrees that such dualistic understanding of God came from Mani, not Christian.  In my conjecture, Augustine who did his theology under the influence of Mani might be one of the culprits in this, yet it would be difficult to treat more in depth how and why this is so. One thing to mention is that Jung brings up St. Clement, saying that according to St. Clement in the ruling of God, Christ is God’s right hand, while Satan is God’s left. In this light, a perspective that says that evil is beyond God is not in line with that of the Bible, and the book of Job pictures Satan as one of God’s Sons might be important in this regard.

“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.”

Even so, many believers still can’t accept this God-image, and reject it in the worst case scenario.  What would be the implications of God who rules over evil, whose right and left hands are the good of Christ and the evil of Satan?  While it is urgent for Christians to get out of such dualistic God-image, what is more urgent would be to find an approach to such non-dualistic understanding of God.  However, this is no easy matter, for telling people going through evil and injustice to accept God’s sovereignty would amount to denying the goodness of God in their lives.  This is where a more subtle, pastoral approach is called for, yet more treatment would be necessary for such epistemological and empirical cacophony between the goodness of God and the lived evilness of God.  In that regard, I will do a review of Tim Keller’s Walking with God through Pain and Suffering in the coming week.
