Evangelism is not a word which one can utter with ease these days. For one thing, it evokes airs of disrespect and superiority to those being evangelized; in some cases, speaking of evangelism even provokes anger among many. What does it mean to talk about evangelism in such a time as this? Isn’t evangelism simply a sugarcoated term for proselytism? Would it even make sense to practice evangelism in the context of a secularized, pluralistic, post-Christendom society, in which everyone is supposed to regard religious matters as private, and to not intrude into someone else’s religion?

강함과 약함(Strong and Weak)은 현재 크리스챠니티 투데이(Christianity Today)의 수석 편집자(Executive Editor)로 일하고 있는 앤디 크라우치(Andy Crouch)의 독립 저자로서의 세번째 저작입니다. 그의 이전 저작들인 Culture Making과 Playing God: Redeeming the Gift of Power에서와 마찬가지로, 크라우치는 강함과 약함에서도 문화 안에서 살아가는 인간에 대해서, 특별히 그의 두번째 저작인 Playing God에서 다루었던 힘과 권력의 문제와 더불어서 이번에는 반대인 약함과 무능함의 문제까지 함께 다루면서 인간이 피조물로서 피조 세계 안에서 번성한다는 것은 무슨 뜻인가라는 무겁고도 중요한 질문을 던지고 있습니다. 저 개인적으로는 이 책이 크라우치의 저작들 중 처음 읽게 된 책이었는데, 내용이 굉장히 좋아서 앞으로 나머지 두 책 또한 서평을 올릴 계획입니다.

나쁜 예수 (Jesus Behaving Badly)는 여러 면에서 제가 개인적으로도, 학문을 하는 사람으로서도 관심을 가지고 추구하는 주제를 다루고 있습니다. 바로 하나님 상(God-image) 개념에 관한 것입니다. 하나님 상(God-image) 개념은 아르헨티나 출신의 심리학자 애나 마리아 리주토(Ana Maria Rizzuto)의 책 살아 있는 신의 탄생(The Birth of the Living God)의 출판을 통해서 널리 퍼지게 되었습니다. 리주토는 1979년에 출간된 이 책에서 하나님 상을 각 개인이 자신의 삶에서 총체적으로 경험하는 하나님(혹은 궁극적 권위의 원천)에 대한 상(image)이라고 정의합니다.

행복의 복음(The Gospel of Happiness)은 여러 면에서 에큐메니컬한 책입니다. 카톨릭 예수회 계열인 LA의 로욜라 메리마운트 대학에서 철학을 가르치는 Christopher Kaczor가 개신교 복음주의권 대학인 바이올라(Biola)대학의 기독교 사상 센터(Center for Christian Thought)의 지원을 통해서 심리학과 영성 형성(Psychology and Spiritual Formation)이라는 프로젝트 연구의 연구원으로 참여하면서 나오게 된 결과물이 담긴 책입니다.

Despite the fact that it has been just a couple of decades since the book first appeared, Fowler’s theory of the so-called ‘faith development,’ or even ‘spiritual development’ has drawn as many supporters as its critics. In particular, it has brought about considerable ripple effects among practical theological circles including pastoral theology and counseling, congregational studies, Christian and religious education, and etc.
